Service Apprentice – Job Description

Reports To: Service Foreman / Service Manager
Location: Portland, MI (travel required)
Position Summary
The Service Apprentice supports the Service Foreman and crew with repairs, retrofits, and small installation projects on commercial building envelopes. This role requires 3+ years of construction experience and an interest in developing skills in architectural metals, carpentry, and exterior envelope systems. The Apprentice assists with hands-on work, learns proper installation techniques, and helps ensure safe, efficient jobsite operations.
Key Responsibilities
Field Support
- Assist the Foreman and crew with daily tasks and jobsite preparation.
- Perform hands-on work including demolition, basic carpentry, installation, and cleanup.
- Help install metal panels, flashing, AVB, sheathing, and exterior trims under supervision.
- Follow instructions, ask questions, and develop technical skills.
Technical Development
- Learn how to diagnose and repair air/water leaks.
- Gain experience with ACM systems, metal wall panels, flashing systems, and roof-edge metals.
- Practice proper use of tools, equipment, and safety procedures.
- Support field measurements and verification for fabricated components.
Safety & Jobsite Conduct
- Follow all safety rules, PPE requirements, and training guidelines.
- Participate in daily safety talks and maintain a clean, organized jobsite.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with the crew and clients when required.
Coordination & Documentation
- Assist with material handling, loading/unloading, and equipment setup.
- Help track jobsite progress and supply needs.
- Support the Foreman with basic documentation and photos when requested.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years experience in commercial construction, carpentry, roofing, architectural metals, or related trades.
- Basic carpentry skills (framing, sheathing, trim work).
- Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Ability to interpret basic measurements.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred
- Experience with metal wall systems, ACM panels, or waterproofing.
- OSHA 10 certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Strong interest in developing long-term trade skills.
